On Friday, February 10, 2023, the Conrad and Scherer law firm brought students from their “Pathways
to a Career in Law” program to the courthouse. Students were led by Mr. William Scherer, and his wife
Anne, as they observed the Honorable Elizabeth Scherer in court during her morning docket.


The students then came to the Honorable Robert F. Diaz’s courtroom where he and the Honorable Betsy
Benson talked about their legal careers and answered questions. Students also had lunch with Chief
Judge Jack Tuter and later attended the investiture of our two new judges, The Honorable Catalina
Avalos and the Honorable Francis Viamontes.

JA’s Hold Bake Sale

The Judicial Assistants of the 17th Judicial Circuit held a bake sale in the North Wing of the Broward County Courthouse on February 14, 2023. A variety of store bought and homemade baked goods were sold.


Proceeds from the sale went to the Judicial Assistants Association where donations help to build connections and promote advancement in the careers of Judicial Assistants.

Students Pay a Visit from Women of Tomorrow Program

The students of the Women of Tomorrow Program at Atlantic Technical High School
paid a visit to the 17th Circuit Courthouse where they were able to participate in a
Q&A session with the Honorable Betsy Benson and the Honorable Michele Towbin
Singer.

Students also had the chance to meet and speak with Attorney Attorney
Crystal Aroche from the law offices of Milber, Makris, Plousiadis & Seiden, LLP about
her career and how the young women could make an impact by pursuing a career
in law.

Piney Grove Academy visits the 17th Circuit Courthouse

The students of Piney Grove Academy visited the 17th Circuit Courthouse where they familiarized themselves with what they have learned about the judicial system in the United States.


Students met with the Broward State Attorney Harold F. Pryor, Public Defender Gordon Weekes, who spoke with the students about their roles in the American judicial system, and later visited with the Honorable Michael J. Orlando and the Honorable Jackie Powell, where students were able to speak with the judges and observe a trial in real time.

17th Judicial Circuit Host Mock Trial

The 17th Judicial Circuit hosted the Broward County Public Schools High School Mock Trial on February
3, 2023. High School students prepared for months and participated as attorneys, jurors and witnesses
in a mock trial using real life scenarios.


The Honorable Michelle Towbin Singer, Honorable Natasha De Primo, Honorable Deborah Carpenter-
Toye, Honorable Lauren M. Alperstein, Honorable Carol-Lisa Phillips, Honorable Giuseppina Miranda,
and Honorable George Odom Jr. participated as judges for the mock trial and guided the students
through the trial process.
