Black History Month – Celebrating Broward’s Black Mayors
In recognition of Black History Month this year, the Seventeenth Circuit and the Broward County Bar Association hosted a Celebration of Broward’s Black Mayors on Friday, February 21, 2020. The honorees included Mayor Dale V. Holness, Broward County; Mayor Hazelle Rogers, City of Lauderdale Lakes; Mayor Ken Thurston, City of Lauderhill; Mayor Wayne Messam, City of Miramar; Mayor Ashira Mohammed, City of Pembroke Park; and Mayor Reverend Eric Jones, Jr., City of West Park.
Retired Judge Ilona Holmes served as event moderator, with Chief Judge Jack Tuter offering welcome remarks and event chairperson, Judge Michael A. Robinson, giving the closing remarks.
Women of Tomorrow Mentoring Program
Since the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, the Central Courthouse has hosted numerous student tours for high schoolers that are part of the Women of Tomorrow Mentor and Scholarship program. The groups of young ladies spend the morning observing court and talking one-on-one with judges and other court staff to learn about their career paths and possibly gain an interest in pursuing the same.
Women of Tomorrow pairs professional women with small groups of public high school girls for monthly school-based mentoring sessions, discussing topics such as college planning, resume writing, career choices, goal setting, time management and others.Career-focused field trips introduce mentees to career options they may not have considered or even heard of before.
Lawyers for Literacy Read to Students
The Broward Bar Association Young Lawyers group called Lawyers for Literacy gathered to read the book, “Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar” to eleven classes of pre-kindergarten students at Dillard Elementary School last week. The lawyers read to the students and also explained what lawyers do to help the community and individuals. The students had lots of questions and gathered to give attorney Amanda Decker and Judge Robert F. Diaz a group hug before they left. The lawyers and students were all smiles and a good time was had by all.
BCBA’s Young Lawyers and Judge Diaz Wrap for Annual Holiday in February Event
On Tuesday, February 18th, 2020, board members of Broward Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section, along with Judge Robert Diaz, gathered at the home of attorney Kimberly Wald of Kelly Uustal to wrap presents for their Annual Holiday in February event. On Saturday, February 22, 2020, they will bring 50 foster children to the Museum of Science and Discovery for a day of fun, gifts, and a museum exploration.
This annual event has been bringing joy to foster children in Broward County for over 20 years.
Judge Powell Swears in New Attorney
Judge Jackie Powell swore in new attorney Marsha Ann Davidson today in her courtroom at the South Satellite Courthouse in Hollywood.
