In recognition of National Read for the Record Day, the book “Quackers” was read to millions of kindergarten and first grade students across the United States. Judge Robert Diaz and Lawyers for
Literacy, a group from the Broward Bar Association Young Lawyers Section, were on hand in Broward County to do their part!
Students from Piney Grove Boys Academy toured the central courthouse last week and visited the courtrooms of Judges Holmes, Williams, Frink and Gillespie. Included in the group photo is Judge Frink and Judge Fahnestock.
Judge Robert Diaz was recently honored by the Hispanic Lawyers Committee of the Broward Bar Association. The award reads “The Honorable Robert F. Diaz, in recognition and Appreciation for your Outstanding Committment, Loyalty, and Service to the Bar and Legal community. Your dedicated leadership has inspired us all.”

The Broward Bar Association hosted a New Attorneys’ Orientation Breakfast at the Central Courthouse this morning. Over coffee and bagels, a panel of the circuit’s administrative judges and Chief Judge Tuter discussed best practices and offered advice to the new attorneys. A tour of the new courthouse building and some courtroom observation rounded out the event.

The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), 25 U.S.C. §1911, provides for transfer of jurisdiction of state court cases involving an Indian child to that child’s tribal court. Specifically, ICWA provides that “In any State court proceedings for the foster care placement of, or termination of parental rights to, an Indian child not domiciled or residing within the reservation of the Indian child’s tribe, the court, in the absence of good cause to the contrary, shall transfer such proceeding to the jurisdiction of the tribe…” Read More
