The Honorable Melinda Brown held a Lunch and Learn with the Young Lawyers Section of the Broward County Bar Association on Monday, June 5, 2023. The lunches are an opportunity to highlight a different Judge from the 17th Circuit each month.
The Young Lawyers Section continues to coordinate these events as a way to connect members of the judiciary with lawyers who are still within their first five years of practicing law.
The Honorable Florence Taylor Barner spoke at a presentation for the Florida
Department of Corrections Probation and Parole Officers. Judge Barner spoke
about the impact of Haitians and Haitian Americans on the legal profession in
celebration of Haitian Heritage Month.
On May 25, 2023, the Honorable Florence Taylor Barner moderated an interview with Justice
John Daniel Couriel for a seminar titled “Practicing with Professionalism”.
Justice Couriel, who is the 90th Justice of the Florida Supreme Court, was being interviewed on
the topic of professionalism with new lawyers as part of the bar’s practicing with
professionalism requirement. Additional topics discussed ranged from civility, decorum in and
out of the courtroom, and mentorship.
Middle School students from Somerset Academy came to visit the 17th Judicial Circuit on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.
While on the tour, students learned about the American Judicial System in depth and met with the Honorable Michael J. Orlando and the Honorable Betsy Benson.
The Broward County Judicial Assistant Association held a bake sale in honor of Memorial Day on Monday, May 5, 2023. In addition to selling baked goods, they also held a raffle to support the Judicial Assistant Association of Florida.
On Friday, May 12, 2023, the 17th Judicial Circuit held the investiture of the Honorable Lauren M. Alperstein and the Honorable Lorena V. Mastrarrigo.
Each judge shared their thoughts and kind words of gratitude to their friends and family, and all of the support that they had received on their journey to the bench.
