Stranahan High Visits the 17th Circuit

Students from the Pre-Law program at Stranahan High School visited the 17th Circuit Courthouse on a guided tour on Wednesday, October 25, 2023.


After briefly visiting the jury selection room and reviewing the jury selection process, the group of students spoke with Judges George Odom Jr., Elijah Williams, Jackie Powell and Betsy Benson in their courtrooms. Each judge shared valuable information about their experience with the field of law and answered questions from students and their professor.

Judge Avalos Speaks on Panel for Diversity Meets

Judge Catalina Avalos spoke as part of a panel discussion at Diversity Meets, a networking event held in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

Judge Barner Host Caribbean Bar Association Awards Gala

Judge Florence Taylor Barner joined Professor Richard Barner to emcee the 27th Annual Caribbean Bar Associations Scholarship Awards and Installation Gala on Saturday, October 14, 2023. The CBA holds the annual gala to award scholarships to young hopefuls who seek a career in the legal field.

Joining Judge Barner and Professor Barner were Judge Jackie Powell, who sang the national anthem, and Judge Jessica M. Marra.

Informed Voters Fair Judges Program Inspires Students

On Friday, October 20, 2023, the 17th Circuit joined the Broward County Women’s Lawyer Association to host the Informed Voters program for a group of local high school students. Chief Judge Jack Tuter introduced guest speakers Broward County Superintendent Peter Licata and Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott. Students learned the importance of becoming informed voters in order to select a fair judiciary, as presented by Judges Stacy Ross, Giuseppina Miranda, Michele Towbin Singer and attorney Madeleine Manello.


The students also had the opportunity to spend time with judges in a Question and Answer session, and participate in a game of Judicial Jeopardy with Judges Jose Izquierdo, Hope Tieman Bristol, Natasha DePrimo and Michael Robinson.

Judge Phillips Joins the Walk For Freedom

The Honorable Carol-Lisa Phillips joined Judicial Assistant Minerva Hernandez, Deputy Roger DeHart and
State Attorney Sheena Kelly for the Walk For Freedom event in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Saturday, October 14, 2023.


The event is held annually to increase global awareness and local participation in the fight against human trafficking.
