Inaugural Event Honors Veterans and Recognizes Judge Merrigan for his Service
On November 8, 2021, the Broward County Bar Association, along with 9 Bar Associations in Florida, hosted “The Florida Patriot: Honoring Legal Leader Veterans’ Service To Country & Community” Zoom event. Legal leaders from nine circuits across the state were recognized for their service to our country and to their community. Judge Edward H. Merrigan, who created our Veterans Court and is a Brigadier General in the Army Reserves, received the award for the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit.

Inaugural Judicial Luncheon for the Fort Lauderdale Friendship Circle
This past weekend, Judge Marina Garcia-Wood was a speaker at the inaugural Judicial Luncheon for the Fort Lauderdale Friendship Circle. The program, which has chapters world-wide, introduces children and young adults with special needs to teenage volunteers and together they participate in social activities around the community. Judge Garcia Wood, along with a number of fellow Judges from the 17th Circuit attended the program and presented certificates of appreciation to adult participants of the Life Skills Training Program, with awards like “Most Prolific Thinker,” “Public Speaking Superstar,” and others.
As the parent of an adult with Autism who participates in one of the many Friendship Circle Programs, the Young Adult Circle Program, Judge Garcia-Wood has seen first-hand how the Program allowing participants to engage in social activities in the community has helped her son develop better social skills. She and the other Judges all stated how honored they were to be a part of this very heartwarming event.
Court Bailiff Spreads Human Trafficking Awareness in Houston
It’s Court Bailiff Roger DeHart’s mission to help spread awareness of the human trafficking problem in the United States, and world-wide. He raises awareness by walking in different parts of the country, and has trekked from Fort Lauderdale to Washington DC on foot, and up the Pacific Coast Highway in California. This year, he took his cause to Houston, TX, and was joined by the Houston Police Department, survivors of human trafficking, and other supporters of the cause.
Judge Porth’s Felony Mental Health Court “Reads for the Record”
Over the last several years, Judge Ari Porth’s Felony Mental Health Courtroom has adopted North Fork Elementary School in Ft. Lauderdale, going to career days and participating in the Children’s Services Council’s Read for the Record events.
Today, October 28, 2021, the judge and staff spent the morning reading this year’s Read for the Record book, Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon, to the school children.
One of the best parts about the event…all of the children that are read to get a copy of the book to take home!
Chief Judge Tuter and Judge Gillespie Honored at Annual Installation Gala
Congratulations to Chief Judge Jack Tuter and Judge Kenneth Gillespie in being honored at the Broward County Bar Association’s 2021 Annual Installation Gala this past weekend. The President’s Award, presented to Judge Tuter, recognizes the person who has most significantly impacted, in a positive manner, the BCBA and the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit. Judge Gillespie received the Stephen R. Booher Award, given to the jurist of the year.
Executive Director Braulio Rosa says, “The Chief Judge has worked tirelessly in tandem with the BCBA to serve the legal community and the people of Broward County and beyond. Judge Gillespie has served as our Judicial Liaison for the past two years, and thanks to his efforts, we were able to secure 100% judicial membership, and successfully host one of the first 500+ attendee Probate meetings on Zoom.”
