Judicial Mentors Help Teens Learn to Navigate the Law

Broward Circuit Judges George Odom Jr. and Keathan B. Frink – along with Broward Public Defender Gordon Weekes and several law enforcement officers – met on Saturday with members of the Lamp Lighters Club of Fort Lauderdale to discuss ways to handle legal encounters with confidence and success. The program,  “Know Your Rights: How to Engage with Law Enforcement,” was a conversation aimed at providing the teens with tools to better navigate brushes with the law. The Lamp Lighters Club is a mentorship program operated by the Zeta Chi chapter of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. Mr. Weekes is a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity and Judges Odom and Frink are members of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. The group met in Judge Odom’s courtroom. @gordon_weekes

A Proclamation, Awards and Lots of Praise: The 2025 State of the Circuit

Chief Judge Jack Tuter heaped praise on the judges and employees of the 17th Judicial Circuit on Friday during a State of the Circuit speech that was filled with admiration, humor and heartfelt sincerity. Judge Tuter, who is stepping down in July after serving eight years as chief judge, received a standing ovation during the event. In attendance were nearly 40 judges, along with numerous court administration employees, county officials and members of the Broward County Bar Association. Broward County Vice Mayor Mark Bogen presented Judge Tuter with a proclamation declaring Friday, Jan. 24, 2025 as “17th Circuit Court Appreciation Day.” Judge Tuter also presented “Friends of the Court” awards to Vice Mayor Bogen, Broward County Administrator Monica Cepero, and attorney Eugene Pettis, co-founder of Haliczer Pettis & Schwamm. Chief Technology Officer Sunil “Sunny” Nemade received the  Chief Judge Award for Excellence for his decades of dedicated and innovative service to the 17th Judicial Circuit. Congratulations to all and thank you Judge Tuter for your service.


New Judges Prepare to Take the Bench at Florida Judicial College

Learning how to be a judge is what Florida Judicial College is all about. A large contingent from the 17th Judicial Circuit is in Orlando participating in FJC in Orlando in preparation for taking the bench. Included are Circuit Judge Johnathan D. Lott; and County Court Judges Lauren N. Peffer, Woody R. Clermont, Corey B. Friedman and Kathleen E. Angione. Judge Lott will preside in Family Court in Fort Lauderdale; Judge Clermont is assigned to the South Regional Courthouse; Judge Peffer, the West Regional Courthouse in Plantation; Judge Angione, the North Regional Courthouse and Judge Friedman, the main courthouse in Fort Lauderdale where he will preside over first appearances. The faculty includes Judges Natasha Deprimo, Keathan Frink, Jeffrey Levenson, Giuseppina Miranda and Magistrate Yves Laventure.

Honoring Judge Peter M. Weinstein with a Courtroom Dedication in his Name

Former Chief Judge Peter M. Weinstein was honored on Friday with a courtroom dedication and ribbon-cutting in recognition of his many years of service. Judge Weinstein served as judge 21 years for the 17th Judicial Circuit, with six of those years as Chief Judge. Sitting judges, retired judges, and local, state and national elected officials along with Judge Weinstein’s family packed the event to show their support and admiration for Judge Weinstein’s contributions to the Judiciary. Courtroom 14150 is now the Chief Judge Peter M. Weinstein Courtroom.Judge Weinstein also served 14 years as a Florida State Senator. Congratulations Judge Weinstein and thank you for your service. Pioneering Gottlieb Family Recognized with Honorary Street Name

Judge Kenneth A. Gottlieb has some bragging rights. The City of Hollywood recently co-named a street in honor of his family’s decades of contributions to the city. The Gottliebs were homeowners, business owners, home builders, community activists and elected officials who helped make Hollywood what it is today. Congratulations on this unique honor! Employee Recognition Awards Kick off 2025

A new campaign to recognize employee milestones kicked off this month with the recognition of nine employees with five years or more tenure in Court Administration. It’s something Trial Court Administrator Joe D’Amico plans to do on a regular basis to show employees they are valued. Thank you for your years of dedicated service! You are what make the 17th Judicial Circuit a success!
