Students Inspired by Visit to Courthouse Clothing Closet

Inspired by what they saw, students on a recent courthouse tour hope to turn admiration into action.

After visiting the Susan J. Aramony Clothing Closet, the Franklin Academy students were so impressed that they’re now hoping to organize a clothing drive to support this impactful courthouse initiative. Managed by Marie Alvarez Ortiz, the donation-based boutique provides families and youth involved in the court system with access to professional attire for job interviews, community service, and special occasions.

Located in Room NW5830, the Clothing Closet was established in 2013 in memory of the late Judge Susan J. Aramony, a dedicated advocate for families and children. Since then, it has served thousands of individuals in need of clothing and accessories for school, court, and other important moments.

Referrals to shop the Clothing Closet are made through court and community-based professionals and coordinated by Court Administration.

Court Administration Takes Wellness Walk

About 20 Court Administration team members stepped away from their desks today for a refreshing walk along the New River, taking time to stretch, enjoy the outdoors, and connect with colleagues they don’t always see during the workday. It was also a great opportunity to take in the fancy yachts along the river, feel the breeze, and clear your head.

The stroll is part of an ongoing health and wellness effort aimed at helping staff “get to know your neighbor” while supporting both mental and physical well-being.

Created by the Health and Wellness Committee, the initiative encourages employees to stay active and engaged. Today’s Riverwalk outing also ties into Court Administration’s step challenge, making wellness a team effort every step of the way. Come join us!

Franklin’s Academy Students Explore the Courts

Students from Franklin’s Academy spent the morning inside the courthouse, getting a firsthand look at the justice system in action

From observing live court proceedings to exploring the jury room, students experienced how the courts operate beyond what they see in textbooks. A highlight of the visit was the “Clothing Closet,” where they met Marie Alvarez Ortiz and learned how the donation-based boutique helps families and youth involved in the court system access professional attire for job interviews, community service, and special occasions.

The students also had the opportunity to meet Judge Elijah H. Williams, who explained how juvenile court works, and Judge Lorena V. Mastrarrigo, who shared her journey to the bench. She even invited students to sit in the jury box, take the witness stand, and try on a judge’s robe, giving them a memorable glimpse into life in the courtroom.

The visit wrapped up with Assistant Public Defender Ana Roditi, who discussed the vital role public defenders play in ensuring access to justice for all. Hands on learning is the best! #17thJudTeam

Stepping Into Wellness Along the Riverwalk

Thirteen employees from Court Administration took a short stroll along the New River today—stretching their legs, enjoying fresh air and connecting with coworkers they don’t always get to see.

The walk is part of an ongoing health and wellness initiative designed to help staff “get to know your neighbor” while supporting both mental and physical well-being.

Developed by the Health and Wellness Committee, the initiative encourages employees to step away from their desks and get moving. Today’s Riverwalk stroll also complements Court Administration’s ongoing step challenge—making wellness a shared journey.

Oriole Elementary Students Get Their Day in Court

Participate in a mock trial, play a math game, discover why perception matters, try on a judge’s robe, bang the gavel, listen to testimony, take photos from the bench, wear a bailiff’s jacket.
Those are just a few things that students from Oriole Elementary in Lauderdale Lakes experienced during a courthouse tour this week. They also met Chief Judge Carol-Lisa Phillips and Judge Kenneth R. Gillespie and Community Outreach Coordinator Janelle Floyd from the Broward Public Defender’s Office.
The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are participants in the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project mentoring program.
