Judge Florence Taylor Barner united with the Community Court Pompano Beach to recognize Major Wayne Adkins who was retiring after 47 years of service with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, February 1, 2024.


Major Adkins was on the steering committee for the Community Court Pompano Beach and will be forever esteemed for playing an instrumental role in the establishment of this location.

Judge Betsy Benson was honored by Mayor Rex Hardin of Pompano Beach and the coordinators of Community Court Pompano Beach with the key to the city on Thursday, February 8, 2024.

Judge Benson received the honor for her commitment to serving the Broward County community and helping those in need.

Students from the BSO Explorer program of Pompano Beach visited the 17th Circuit courthouse on Tuesday, February 19, 2024.


The explorers visited with Judges Elijah H. Williams, Michael J. Orlando and Jackie Powell who spoke to them about the judicial system and what it could be like for them to pursue a career in the legal field.

Court Administration from the 17th Circuit joined the Early Childhood and Dependency Drug Court to host a meet and greet for one of their newest collaborators in Peer Specialist Martine Pierre on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

Ms. Pierre represents the South Florida Wellness Network and is part of a team that offers a variety of services for individuals and families in need.

Judge Florence Taylor Barner led the speed mentoring event at St. Thomas University College of Law on February, 15, 2024. Students engaged in brief sessions with various judges and attorneys who offered career advice and suggested best practices for the students as they begin their journeys as legal professionals.


Assisting with the event were 17th Circuit judges Elaine A. Carbuccia, Michele Towbin Singer, Lorena V. Mastrarrigo, and former 17th Circuit judge and Dean at St Thomas University College of Law Tarlika Nunez-Navarro.

The 17th Judicial Circuit of Florida will be open for normal operation at all of its locations on Monday, February 19, 2024.

Judge Florence Taylor Barner held Community Court Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. This was the first week that the Community Court Fort Lauderdale was held at its new location. Court will continue to be held Tuesdays from 12:30 PM-4:00 PM.

The students of Sheridan Technical High School visited the 17th Circuit courthouse for a guided tour on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.


The students learned more about the American judicial system, observed an actual trial with Judge Peter Holden, and spoke with Judges Thomas J. Coleman, Stacy Ross, and Michael J. Orlando.

Several Judges from the 17th Judicial Circuit attended the Pathways to Careers in Law event on
Wednesday, January 31, 2024. Fourteen students from the pre-law magnet program of Fort
Lauderdale High School were chosen as fellows who experienced what it will be like to attend
law school, participate in mock trials, and network with other law professionals.


Representing the 17th circuit were Judges Elaine A. Carbuccia, Jackie Powell, Ari Abraham
Porth, Robert F. Diaz, Nina W. Di Pietro, Frank Ledee, Carol-Lisa Phillips, Ginger Lerner-Wren,
Michael I. Rothschild, Catalina Avalos, Kevin P. Tynan, Alberto Ribas, and Stacy Ross.

Judge Florence Taylor Barner, Chair for the Broward County Bar Association Mentoring Committee, lead a mentoring workshop for the students of the Nova Southeastern University Undergraduate Law and Legal Studies Program on Tuesday, January 30, 2024.


The event was deemed a great success as over seventy students were in attendance and received guidance and advice from several attorneys and 17th Circuit Judges Stefanie C. Moon, Jessica M. Marra, Robert F. Diaz, Lorena V. Mastrarrigo, Jeffrey R. Levenson, Jackie Powell and Stacey Schulman.
